The King James Version of the Holy Bible was authorized by King James I of Great Britain. It was published in 1611.

It succeeded the Geneva Bible as the most widely accepted English translation of Judeo-Christian scripture. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica:

By June 30, 1604, James had approved a list of 54 revisers, although extant records show that 47 scholars actually participated. They were organized into six companies, two each working separately at Westminster, Oxford, and Cambridge on sections of the Bible assigned to them.
