Rae Morris

Rae Morris is a British singer-songwriter from Blackpool.

Born in 1992, she began playing the piano at just four years old, but didn’t show an interest in writing her own music until she watched fellow Blackpudlian Karima Francis on a TV programme. The two eventually entered a relationship, and Francis acted as a mentor of sorts as she began songwriting for the first time. Signing to Atlantic Records in September 2011, she began work on what would become her debut album. On early EPs such as From Above and Grow, the tracks were strictly piano-based with sparse production. However, as time progressed, her sound shifted towards a more electronic-based soundscape. “Do You Even Know” served as an introduction to this new sound, with later singles such as “Cold” and “Closer” showcasing a new depth to the burgeoning singer. After years of recording and anticipation, her debut album, Unguarded, was finally released in January 2015 and entered the UK Top 10. Morris spent much of 2016 and early 2017 completing her second studio album, which again signaled a change in sound with a much heavier emphasis on electronics and a bolder, more self-assured vocal style and lyrics. “Reborn”, released in June 2017, was heralded by critics as a career-defining single, showcasing almost Björk-like qualities. “Do It” was similarly acclaimed, and the parent album, Someone Out There, was confirmed to be released on February 2, 2018. Upon release, critics labelled it a complete and welcomed departure from the safe, naïve sound of her debut, and noted that Morris had reshaped herself from a reserved singer-songwriter to a confident and bold artist.
